Savannah enclosure question

mutant Mar 06, 2004 03:48 PM

Right, i have asked this in other places, and from a few people who keep boscs, but i keep getting different answers. My cage for the bosc i am hopefully getting is 4.5' x 3' x 2' (200 gallon). I have been told this is an ok size for an average sized adult bosc, but is it? Nearly every care sheet i have seen has said that a 75 gallon is the smallest size, but that seems way too small. Obviously if i have more room in the future i would give it a bigger vivarium, but is the size i mentionned big enough (considering i cant say whether extra space or not will be available)?

Thanks in advance.

I'd say it's reasonable for a small adult, not an avarage. But still, bigger is better. I keep my very small (only 2 feet) adult sav in a 4 by 8 cage. He's happy with that, no escape attempts all the time. He usually prefers to be in there, over being outside.

That size sounds like a cage I gave to a friend with my timor when I had to make room, it was a 75 gallon size. He also has sitting nearby a 75 Oceanic which is similar, I dont remember the dimensions. A 265 is 7x2x3 I believe, so your 200 may be 6.5x2x3.
Personally Id build something from wood with FRP lining and forget that heavy aquarium, they are designed for fish so they are not easy to adapt to reptiles correctly.

what is FRP lining, i'm about to build a cage for my savannah.

It is a 200 gallon, and it is a vivarium made from wood, not a converted fish tank. 3' is also the depth not the height. Anyway, size wise, would it be ok, or not? 4.5' x 3' x 2' (LxDxH)

I say bigger is always better, the more room a monitor has to explore the happier he is, I just finished buildin the final home for my savannahs. The front is 12 feet long , the back is 8 feet long , 4 feet wide and 3 feet deep. It was alot of work and i'm proud to say I only hit my finger with the hammer once.
If someone can tell me how to send a pic I will be more than happy to show off the new home.
Lizards live better than I do. lol

An aquarium size is a bad reference for housing a monitor, they are for fish that swim in several levels of depth and allows you full viewing capability, which does nothing for a monitor. How does 4ftx4ftx8ft sound as a preferred minimum size for an adult medium sized monitors cage? 718.12 gallons by volume.
I referenced a lizard lounge I was given very cheaply at 4ft long by 3 ft high by 2 ft wide, it still houses the timor I gave my one friend and his new mate.

Fiber reinfored poly...etc .Buy it for 26 or so a sheet from hardware stores. Ill use it on my next big cage. Indestructible, hard, flexible, waterproof etc.
