I would reccomend a Panther or a Veiled for a first time chameleon. Panthers are generally more colorful and a little bit smaller. They are however in the area of 200 to 250 dollars. Veilds are much cheaper and still very nice. There are many good breeders out there and many good web-sights. My favorites are www.calumma.com and www.bluebeastreptile.com
Also look at all the past posts on this forum for info as well.
I have both panthers and veileds and I personally like the panthers better.
Good luck with getting a chameleon.

I agree with Stevie16. But a)make sure you get a male and make sure it's AT LEAST 4 months old. Babies die in the hands of newbies.

For basic husbandry info see www.chameleonjournals.com. For species profile see www.adcham.com. As for books, there's no one perfect book out there. The book by Vosjoli & Ferguson is quite useful for both panthers & veileds. Petr Necas' book has far and away the most info on the greatest nmber of species. Linda Davison's book has a number of good ideas on caging (especially for those with little money).
