HELP: Strange Worts on Leopard Gecko's Cheecks...

berg12012 Mar 07, 2004 01:19 AM

Had this male leopard gecko, which is about 3 years old, in a large terrarium with waxy monkey tree frogs for 6 months or so. All the while he seemed very healthy, ate like a pig, and other than that, I really didn't pay much attention to him. I tore down the terrerium the other day, and finally notticed these lumps on his cheecks. I probably should have notticed this far sooner, but like I said, he was in a very large terrerium, and as long as I saw him in there once and a while, I didn't worry. He still eats like a pig, and seems healthy overall... except for the worts.

They are very hard in texture, and they seem painful to him, as when I probe around on them, he gets very feisty. Granted no leo likes to be poked at around it's mouth, but he reacts very strickly to touching the worts.

I have thought everything from some kind of reaction from any chemicals from the waxies, to even cancer. Anyone seem this before?

Any reply is appreciated!

Well, those lesions can be caused by various pathogens, most likely bacterial in nature. First, you should not have them with Waxy Monkey Frogs or any other inter-specific species. Re-check your husbandry for Leopard geckos; ie.: caging, temperatures, substrate, etc.

The "warts" look more like abcesses and can be caused by various bacteriums. You should have a herp-oriented vet determine a diagnosis & therapy for the problem(s).

Below is a link with a lot more information on Leopard gecko health problems & may help with your gecko's infection. Please see a vet ASAP.

Thanks for the info... but paying for professional medical attention for a very common and easily CB $10 gecko isn't something I'm willing to do. I realize there are people who have a very different oppionion, but that is my own.

What I'm wondering is would it help to use an antibiotic cream on them, or even possibly to administer Batril? Anyone have any experience with treating this?

Thanks
