Large Collections & Care Allocation

Over the years, I have noticed a lot of herpers getting the "need to collect" syndrome. Like a friend of mine who bought a panther chameleon and killed with poor care because he was saving money to buy a leopard gecko.

Ii fee it is better to get one or two species over time and devote as much time/energy/money as you can to their husbandry? I was contemplating buying day geckos. I priced UV lights and thought “Hmmm, I could just shove these geckos in a standard ten gallon tank and skip out on UV light to save my money to set up a tank for something else”. I chose not to do this. I decided it was better to devote as much time and energy to a pair of small day geckos in a twenty extra high with the proper lighting, timers, and an incubator than blowing money on half-assed setups and no container for raising eggs.

Not trying to brag, rant, or point a finger at anyone here, but I felt somebody had to say it.

Well, if you're really dedicated and a little wily, you can have a bunch of animals and still not skimp on anyone's care, even on a shoestring budget. It's not really that tough. You just have to know your limitations before you run out and start buying people. (and have a vet fund)
