New Anole Family

lextek Jun 10, 2003 09:08 PM

My 8 year old daughter just brought home a Green Anole. Her class had 8 of them up for adoption. Well for the first day he stayed in a small aquarium from som past goldfish. After reading I learned this was way too small. He was eating live crickets fine.
After a weekend of research and shopping. We now have a 25 gallon terrarium in the livingroom. A 40 watt bulb for heat on one side. A Reptisun 5.o for UVB. Several p[lants, two thermometers, humidit gauge, Reptibark and sanblasted grapevines for the the little creature to climb on. Plants are misted.
Since he has been in his new home I have added a few crickets. I have not seen him eat them. Before he would ponce on them. I also am not sure I see them in the tank. It seems he turn very, brown when he is under the heat lamp on the grapevine. Is this OK? SHould I worry about him not attacking his food?

Hello Lextek:
It sounds like your Anole has a very good habitat. Even though a 40 watt bulb is not very big you may want to make sure the tank is not overheating. A full spectrum light would be a good idea for the terrarium.
You did not say how long this anole has been in this setup so it is difficult to really pinpoint a problem. It is possible the anole is just not hungry though they usually will eat at least every other day.
The other thing I would suggest is to offer the anole some variety in it's diet. Green anoles are very fond of mealworms. Mine eat them regularly. They also love to chase flying insects such as moths on occasion.
I hope this info helps.

"Butterfinger" has been in his new home since Sunday evening. One end of the tank is around 85 the cooler side is 75. I have two of the the stick on thermometers near the top of the tank. One on each end.

Hello Lextek:
It sounds like your setup is fine. The temp ranges are near perfect. The only extra thing you might want to do is add a live Pothos plant and train the runners to climb the grape vine. Green anoles like to scurry about among the leaves. I think after a couple days the anole will settle down to it's new home and start eating regularly.
The only other thing you might want to do is offer the anole 3/4 grown crickets. Sometimes larger crickets intimidate them and they leave them alone. They will almost always eat smaller crickets.
Have a Great Day!!!
