tockay housing help!

drunk_on_chivas Mar 07, 2004 10:05 AM

i recently caught an adult tockay from the resort i was staying at. i want to inquire about its housing. at the moment i have a piece of drift wood.. a water bowl and a feeding bowl. i put a cardbox vertically as a hide but it keeps knocking it down.at the moment i'm feeding it worms in a bowl. will it eat out of a bowl? and i read that tockays hardly drink from water bowls.
and all you tockay keepers out there...pls send some pics of your tockays housing for inspiration!
i'm a snake keeper and don't know much bout lizards.
a million thanks.

Most tokay geckos drink water from driplets on the side of there cage or plant.Make a hide spot out of logs or rocks.Give it some plants for cover.A basking spot would also be a good idea.

Here is my male tokay

I have two different set ups for my Tokays. My 10 gal setup has gravel on the bottom of the tank. There are 3 small plants in there. I like to use Pothos (Ivy type plant-they grow a lot with minimal maintenance. Hard to kill). I leave my plants in the pot and just put the plants in the tank first then put the gravel in. I use arched pieces of bark for hiding places. You can ubmerge on in the gravel a little and it will make a neat cave for it. I put a few sticks in for climbing. He seems fine.

My 30 high has gravel on the bottom and pieces of wood arranged to make hiding places on the ground. I have 1 big pothos hanging basket in there. I removed the hanging part. There is driftwood in there arranged so that he can climb. The pothos covers some of the limbs and make for more hiding spots.

Tokays like high humidity about 80-85%. I dunno what my humidity is in my tank, but when I open the lid it feels like a jungle in there. That is why I use gravel on the bottom of the tank. If you keep the water level just below the top of the gravel your plants will always be watered and the humidity will stay high. If you are using a wire mesh top on your terrarium cover the top to keep the humidity in the tank.

I feed my tokays crickets. As a treat I will feed them some moths from outside. They like those. I also feed them baby pink mice occasionally. Tokays are visual predators so their food has to move in order for them to eat it. That's why crickets work well. Roaches are good too and are more nutritious.

Where did you catch your Tokay?

Tokays normally wont drink froma bowel and should be misted daily so they can drink from the sides of the tank, leaves etc. They may or may not eat from a bowel. Mine wont, they just sit and watch but wont eat from it. Mine dont go for mealies or supers alot but love their crix and occasional pinkies.

Thanx, its a 120 gal. I have a second one just like it and use smaller ones for the babies. I'm getting ready to make it bigger by adding to the top. The top comes completely off so I can add on and make it another 2- ft taller. heres a pic of the simple tank I use for small Tokays after they hatch till I sell them.
