A few more baby slider q's..

feuerwolf Mar 07, 2004 11:48 AM

He keeps trying to climb out of his tank. Is this normal? What should I do?

Also, I'm getting another baby slider in a couple weeks. Do I need to slowly introduce him or her to Herb or can I just put them in?

Sorry to be a pain I just wanna be a good mommy for him!!! =) Thanks again.

I don't know why it's trying to climb out, how high is the water? Does it have basking areas? Areas where it could rest and not have to swim? It shouldn't be trying to climb out. Introducing another turtle may be difficult, it depends on when you got the baby turtle. After having a turtle for a while, it starts to recognize it's enclosure as it's home, and no one elses. When you put them together, watch them carefully, they may strike at each other, if they do take the old one out and let the new one get adjusted, then trying introducing them again. Try food as well, feed them while they are together.

the water is 3 inches, he has a basking area and some fake plant things to rest on that he seems to love. but everytime he goes to this one corner he just tries to climb out.
the other turtle i'm getting from where i got herb. i just got herb a few days ago, i'm trying to get this next one as soon as possible to make it easier for the two of them...
thanks a lot.

Well if you got them both from the same place, they were most likely kept together with a bunch of other turtles. I doubt they'll fight. Let me know what happens. If you have any other questions my email address is Helmz614@aol.com

P.S.- Try having something in every corner of the enclosure, enough so that the turtle can just hang out and rest.

Just a tip, you can raise the water level to as full as you can and still have a basking area. Baby turtles are generally great swimmers and they love having the extra room. The water will stay clener much longer if there is more of it. I believe you said your tank is a ten gallon? I hope you plan on upgrading before you add another turtle, two babies would last awhile in a 55 gallon tank, but not very long in a ten.

I know they won't last long in the ten gallon I have, but they're just in that until spring break, which is next week, and I have tons of much bigger tanks at home that I'm going to pick up. =) I took your advice and filled it up more so he's still got just enough room to bask and he seems to be loving it by the way. =) This is just a temp. setup though.

If you're planning to buy another hatchling from a store, why not see if there's a rescue in your area that has them for adoption first? With so many unwanted sliders needing new homes, there's a chance that there's one in your area.

Try www.anapsid.org to see if there's a rescue near you, or try www.turtlehomes.org to see if they know of any hatchlings in your area that need a home.

Thanks, I just emailed a home right by my parents' house to see if they have baby sliders. =)

Make sure you keep your new turtle seperate for at least
4-6 weeks. You need to make sure that you are not introducing
a sick turtle to your healthy one.

If at the end of that period your new turtle is eating well
and acting normal it would be fine to put them together.
It will be an adjustment, but should work out in time.

If you have an aquarium set-up which is glass, that is
why the turtle is doing it. Also, you may need to give
him a larger set-up.

Hope this helps

Thanks a lot. He's eating now though, I think he just needed regulated temps... =)
