Guyanese BCC, future breeding stock

Jonathan_Brady Mar 07, 2004 11:53 AM

As nature would have it, as SOON as I got all the boas to sit still for a pic, the sun peaked out from behind a cloud and cast TOO much light on these animals, so, they're a little washed out in terms of color (trust me). But, the pics turned out ok I guess. Anyway, the large one is the female (Rose) and the other two are males. All Guyana BCC. I'm hoping to breed them Winter of '05. That will make them all about 4-4.5 years old. Let me know what you think! thanks, jb

If you'll notice, in the first pic, Rose's tail is crossing over Mr. Peaks 3rd saddle, in the second pic, you can see she left him a present on that saddle! My question is, is that just a completely random thing? Or is that one way for females to spread their pheromones? She's never been around a male before and I have ... ooooohhhh..., roughly ZERO experience breeding, so I'm just curious to know what you guys think... Thanks for any insight! jb

Rose and Mr. Peaks were born in captivity from gravid imported females. The other (named Prince b/c he's FRIGGIN purple) was purchased from Xtreme Reptiles, so you can venture a guess where he came from...
Anyway, the males are obviously smaller than Rose and there's a good reason for it. Despite the same feeding schedule, they've definitely exhibited slower growth rates and the reason is that, Mr. Peaks had a little gurge problem before I got him and Prince started his gurge problem w/ his first meal. Mr. Peaks has always been fine in my collection, but he was definitely smaller than he should have been when I got him. Prince hasn't really grown at all since I've had him however, he has lightened up significantly (he was so dark of a purple, he was black) and his parasite load is now taken care of and he is starting to put on weight.
I'm guessing I'll see 1.5' growth spurt out of Rose in the next year (putting her at 5.5') and at least 1' if not more out of both males putting them both at 4'. Therefore, they SHOULD be ready by breeding season of '05/'06.
Now, anyone think I should choose one of the males over the other to try to do the job first? If so, why?

and it will differ from the rest of the mob. I like more color than less color. I love a huge saddle with peaks. Rose has this. One of your males has this. These are the two I would breed together first. However, color must come before saddle...if this male doesn't have the best coloring (sigh), go with the other.

Like I said, I realize most people prefer the skinny, all gangly peaks kind of saddle, like a skinny pree teen/teen that is all knees and elbows...but give me buff any day!!!

I would use both animals, I am seeming to have great success this year by using multiple male groups. This seems to stimulate a more intensified courtship, and after time it is easy to identify which male is preffered by the female, then you can pull the remaining male/males and proceed with a hopefully successful pairing.
And with the quality of your males your outcome would be outrageous either way!!!!

in a few years you should be able to produce some of the best looking Guyanas out there. Put me down for a pair or two!
