Skin problem - curling scales

Moezard Mar 07, 2004 03:06 PM

Sometimes in the last two months, some of the scales on my beardie, particularly his right side, have started to curl. Any idea what is causing this? He is about 3 and a half years old, and otherwise in good health.

Is this something to be worried about?

A couple things come to mind that may cause the scales to curl like that. One is your dragon managed to get itself burned to too close to the basking light. He is dehydrated or close to shedding (though there isn't the usual greying of the skin normally associated with sheding in the pictures), mites or some other external parasites. I can't find anything mentioned in the books I have about the scales curling like that.

Unfortunately all I can do is guess, your best bet may be to take him to a qualified reptile vet that is familier with bearded dragons and their diseases.

I've never seen or heard of anything like this either. I don't think he was burned (no marks or wounds) and if it was dehydration seems like it would be all over his body, not just one side.

I might take him to the vet - but it's over an hour to a decent reptile vet, and I'm not even sure that something is wrong.
