Silkworm moths laying eggs

schwartzenstobe Mar 07, 2004 03:33 PM

Some of my silkworms just started cocooning this week. When moths emerge how long until they lay eggs and should I put them in a special container? how should I keep the eggs? Thanks Matt

Matt-

The moths will breed and lay eggs with in 24hrs after emerging. Some may take longer to breed/lay if both sexes are not available at time they emerge. The moths should be placed on a flat plastic surface or on wax paper for easy egg removal. The eggs when laid are yellow, fertile eggs will turn purple. Once the eggs have been laid place them in the refrigerator for 3-9 months. Some eggs may hatch right after being laid but don't count on it. Hope this helps!
