Yay! New Malis!

el_toro Mar 07, 2004 04:56 PM

Hurrah! Two Mali Uros were delivered to my house this weekend! The previous owner is heading off to college and surrendered them to a rescue in Portland. Through arrangements made by Veronicag and Lanae, I just adopted these guys.

They are still small - smaller than my adult Saharans, though I haven't measured them yet. And they are WICKED cute!! The male (Tank) is very friendly and tame. About an hour after they were situated in the incresingly crowded lizard bedroom, I put my hand in the tank near him. He approached, tongue flicked my finger, and promptly climbed into my hand and up my arm. It's such a delight after my wild and wily Saharans. The female (Turtle) is more skitty, but will tolerate petting and will take food from my hand.

Let's see if I can still do the multiple photo thing...

Here's the picture Veronica took of them:

And this is one of Tank that was sent to me before I ever saw them:

Hey!!

That looks like my Tanks twin! My guy is a little over 18 months has about the same girth as yours and is 13in.

They could be twins.

Hee hee! We'll have to make your Tank big brother, though, since mine is apparently Tiny Tank - I haven't measured, but he can't be 10" total length. Makes me wonder since he's supposed to be well older than your Tank!

it depends alot on how they were raised...and on what. cuz mine should be 23 months....unless he was actually younger when i bought him. but if doug was right then mine is almost 2 and he's only 9 inches but growing quickly!!!!! i think he might be younger than that though cuz of what was posted above about the 13 inch one at about this age.....i'll have to talk to doug about it and see what he says.

Well, I know the growth rates vary wildly depending on husbandry, as you say. The soil subtrate debate, specifically. My pair sounds in line more with yours than with BigMac's.

Hey, BigMac - what's your setup like? And have you had Tank since hatchlinghood? (Sorry, if you've said before, I don't remember)

hatchling care does have a big impact on their growth.

my vlad has been housed by doug on millet for almost 2 years....then he was housed on it for 4 months by me.....in the time i had him i saw no noticable growth.

i put him on the moist substrate and i decided that he was doing much beeter on it....i didn't think he was growing though. then i thought to weigh him. he looked much heavier, and actually longer!!! i decided to measure him and sure enough in a little over a month vlad has put on almost an inch!!!!!!!!!! i can't believe it....he was 7.5 inches when i got him from doug, about 8 (just over) when i put him on the moist stuff.....and then i just measured him and he was almost 9!!! it's so awesome to know jhe's finally growing.

When my friend said she had two rescued mali's I immediately thought of you Torey. You take such good care of your reptiles! I'm so glad you have them now and that you are so happy with them. They will no doubt be happy and healthy in your care. Keep me updated on how they do.

Take care,
Veronica
