What is a good nesting site/material for ackies?

I have a ackie that's been digging for days, but refuses to lay her eggs. How long do they dig normally?
What is the best nesting material? Right now I use a box with a hole on top. In it is 3 inches of warm moist loose soil/coconut shavings. She can't really dig a tunnel in it cause it is not firm enough. Will she lay the eggs anyway? Schould I use sand or clay?
