very VERY sick Whites Tree Frog.. help!

anemone Mar 07, 2004 05:07 PM

Okay, okay I know you should always buy the best looking healthiest frog in a pet store, but.. Okay they had about 5 Whites Tree Frogs and I been thinking about getting one. I notice this poor frog that is extermly skinny and doesn't even move or climb, just lays there. I always seem to feel sorry for the sick, buy them, and help them. But this ones bad. I thought he was just hadn't ate. But I noticed he has mouth rot, red leg, one toe missing and 3 more that look as if they are rotting off, and is brown(w/ 3 small lime spots). And he won't eat at this moment. They had him in a half water, half land tank with no heat and another dead frog in the enviroment. Now he's in a tank with heat, climbing areas, small bowl, and bedabeast w/ moss. What can I do to help him?

First off you shouldn't have bought him if there were other dead frogs in the encloser, it's gotta be an indicater that there is something wrong.Second off no matter how sorry you feel for the fella' you still should get the healthier/ healthiest of the bunch so you don't end up in problems like this. Third, i'm not really sure there is much for you to do. sounds like this guy has it rough, even if it was through no fault of your own, which i'm sure it wasn't.

Treefrogmatthew...I'm shocked at your seemingly cruel and uncaring response to someone who was asking for advice. My heart goes out to this person who would pick the weakest, little frog in the bunch and try to bring him back to a happy healthy frog. It takes a lot of courage and love to try and nurse a dying animal back to health..and for someone to go and pay money to rescue a little guy from a lonely death.. well! I say go for it! I would do it in a heart beat! I can't stand to see animals suffer. You should have recommended that he turn that pet store in for animal neglect.

Anenome,

What area do you live in? You should be able to look up on your computer if there are "exotic" pet Vetinarians in your area. I found one in my area (sacramento) and they said it would only cost $35.00 to bring my little guy in if he ever got sick. I would call them up and see if they can see your little friend, or offer advice. They might have an antibiotic that will work for him. Poor little guy.. Good for you!!! We need more people that are willing to take on responsibility for the sick animals..if they can be saved, the someone should try.. I would also call the ASPCA and turn that petstore in..its obvious they aren't caring for their pets properly.

Way to go Anenome! Keep us posted!! I hope your little froggie friend gets better.. Even if he doesn't, he will know the feeling of love before he moves on..

Called the vet today and he said he's dehydrated of water. It's from the coldness of where he was and lack of it. Good news though: he doesn't have red leg or mouth rot. All the signs were from dehyration. The hard spots on his mouth and nose is from his skin sticking. Rather than slimyish, he's hard and stickyish. So that cause him to stick, get stuck, and pull on his skin. His toes rotting off are also from that. And they should heal within time.. The rednesss in his legs are just from being so so skinny. And he said all I have to do is just.. To keep soaking him in 84degrees water to get him undehyrated. I have been doing this today and he's getting greener! He's also tried jumping now! He's still not eatting and still not great... but better! Anyone have anymore tips?

And thank you for the last reply, you understand how I am. That's why I said in the first message, I understand your suposse to get the healthier, I knew someone would say something. But I "wanted" the sick one. I like to buy the sick and treat them. Like rescuing. It's my money and I feel pround everytime I make an animal better with just a lil care not always gotten. =)

The problem is... as much as you helped that little frog, the petstore is going to turn around and take the 200% profit they made selling it to you and buy more little frogs and not take care of them. And it's not like it was a complex problem, all the petstore needed to do was give them water! Unless you can talk the petstore into giving the very sick ones at cost, I wouldn't give them more money to keep their 'business' running. A better thing to do would be to take notes on all their sick animals (has to be more than just frogs) and start calling government agencies like animals control, the ASPCA, or the Local Humane Society.

Way to go!! I'm so glad your little guy is getting better. And please, DON"T Forget to turn that bad pet store into the ASPCA! Animals don't have a voice of their own, they need to rely on people like us who can make a difference!

I'm keeping fingers crossed and prayers in for your little froggie friend.. My little guy, "Cartmen" says he hopes your little friend pulls through!

Thanks so much frog429, I really apprectiate it. =) I've very glad to see he's at least moving around and a lil more happier. I even caught him sleeping today, which he hasn't done since I had him. Now the only problem is, he won't eat. Now this scares me, because every frog I have gotten or had that wouldn't eat, does just that and dies. I held him today and had a cricket with tweezers and rubbed it on his mouth and wiggled it in front of him for like 15mins.. and nothing! Actaully, he did open his mouth once, but I think it was because he was mad. I was shocked he did it and didn't think to stuff it in! But now he won't, and he started jumping away so I knew he was stressed and stopped. I have about 5 crickets in his cage all the time and he hasn't ate any. And I've already tried mealworms also. How can I make him??

frog429 Mar 10, 2004 06:56 PM

Anenome, I'm so sorry. I don't know what else to suggest. Is his temperature/humidity okay? its good that he's moving around. perhpas the Antibiotics take away his appetite (I think you had said the vet gave you antibiotics? maybe I was wrong..not sure ) umm.. here is a website that I have found helpful - http://allaboutfrogs.org/info/doctor/sick.html

This guy might be able to help you better than we can as well. I hope that your little guy starts to eat.. maybe you can gently try force feeding him? I wonder how long it has been since his last meal. Did you do anything about that awful pet store? Don't forget to turn them in..thats animal cruelty..

I will keep happy thoughts for your little green friend.. I hear the WTF are very hardy..hopefully he will prove that right..

Hello. That is wonderful that it looks like his health is improving, but i have a suggestion to get him to eat better. First of all, make sure his temperature in the cage is quite warm, so that his immune system can get rid of whatever might be wrong, and he can digest properly. Don't leave crickets in the cage all the time becuase not only is there a chance that they will start chewing on your frog (which can cause infection and sores), but he also will not be stimulated by them. Try taking them out for a couple of days, then trying a cricket or two overnight. If they aren't eaten, remove them and try again a day later. Keep this up for a little bit, and see if it works. It has in my experience. If not, I don't know where to go from there. Hope this works for you. Good luck.

My frog died Thursday morning. I woke up early and was getting ready for a trip for my school and gave him warm water and everything.. he was still doing better. And he finally turned green! And also I seen him chomp after a few crickets, but never caught them. I was so excited. But when I left my mom said he died about 5minutes after I left. I felt so bad, because he was trying sooo hard in the past few days and esp hours! I took him in Friday and they gave me another frog.(I kept him though, to burry) and they wouldn't even let me pick it out. We tried to tell them they were doing something wrong, but they were like "Oh, things happen. When they don't eat, welp they just die." But when I went in again there was 2 more in there died and one half(his feets was ripped off and bleeding and he was skinny and gray and his bones were poking out). They gave me the fattest best one. He has done fine so far. He hasn't ate yet. But he just sits on the floor of his tank where the heater is and cuddles. You can tell these pet stores frogs have no heat. I hope this one does good...
Thanks frog429 alot for all the help and great replys. I tried to help him and at least he knew that before he died. I helped him live a lil longer and that was my goal. Eventhough it didn't work out, at least I helped. =)

Oh Anenome,I'm so sorry! But you're right, something is wrong with that pet store. You need to contact the ASPCA. That is awful, the poor little frogs. Well, at least your little guy had a comfortable home and some love before he left. I'm sure your new frog will be very happy and live a very, healthy, happy life. Keep up posted. I wish I could help more, but you really need to contact an authority regarding that horrible pet store.. Best of luck to you and your little frog buddy.

Please forgive me if my previous post seemed cruel and uncaring, that wasn't my intent.
