What is this C/A Biometric Ratio I keep hearing about?

jrbl Mar 07, 2004 08:29 PM

What is this. How can you get the sex of the individual from this? It seems much easier and would probably be less stressful on the animals than traditional sexing. Can anyone do this or is it something very complicated that is better left to professionals? Thanks for the help, JOsh

Josh,

I invite you to look through previous posts on this forum for more information on this.

The C/A Biometric ratio is a backup guide for sex determination. By itself, it seems to have a great deal of merit but should also being taken in account with other sex determining means. (ie.shape of the head- Females have softer features,The skin test-I believe it was Justin who posted putting a proven male shedded skin in an enclosure to see if it provokes an aggressive reaction. If so, it indicates a male, Etc) Probing with Corucia seldom works. It proves inconclusive. Due to extra effort involved, You could cause internal damage and end up as well with one pissed Skink.

Anyone can do it although it takes much practice. The Ratio is the widest width of the head / widest girth. .6-.75 is female. >.~75 is male. C=Caput (Head in Latin) / A=Ambitus (Girth in Latin) The beauty of a Biometric Ratio is that it is a ratio. As such, it can be done off a clear picture. It doesn't matter if the picture is larger or smaller than life because it is a ratio.

Best Regards,
Jean
