Another pic of the Feral Yard Agama

DVL Mar 07, 2004 09:18 PM

Spring is just now breaking-- getting more & more activity so I hope to see all the critters soon. This fella has lived in this rock pile since late 1999. It is a great coincidence that he and the rocks have the same coloration! I think the rocks are evolving to hide under the lizard.
Chuck & DI pics soon to follow!!!

UGHHHHHHHHH -- I don't know?>?>? He cost less than $15 though and was called ---- let me think about this one. I can't remember what the tag said-- either red or black agama I believe. He is a good looking lizard --- I sure need to find him a sweetie to share those dark rocky crevices with this summer! Is there anyone out there breeding these guys?? I used to but sold em or gave em all away----- they made lots of babies but there was absolutely no market for em. That's shame--- I could have been rich !!!

David

ps--
( upon preview of message it hit me-- tag said "Painted Agama"-- a very scientific title to say the least!!!

that looks like a black agama to me !

I had several Clown Agamas-- and they were all much lighter in color--male & female. I guess I never thought about it-- this guy being much darker than the others were! It would be cool to find a female of the same coloration/ subspecies/ or what ever!! Keep me in mind if you ever stumble ( oh yea--it is FRIDAY NIGHT) upon one!!

on Saturday nitghts David LOL

Hey I think ya have a black agama there. The reason being I have been looking at a very cool pair of black agama's and inquiring about them.

But the ones I was looking at had some orange, I gave you the scientific name earlier, stella, or something.

I think yours, is actually a subspecies and is black agama astra, hehehhehe
I'm getting sorta smart, for Friday nite, LOL
Anyway he is pretty neat, I like him, and will look out for a female,

That I think is one of the major problems of commercial collecting-We cannot get locality data for any of the animals. I think is is very important to breed like localities as I do with the chucks but that is just my opinion. Tom

Also I think that blacks may have some cream highlights and come from higher elevations in the Caucuases. I believe the Painteds are stellio brachydactylla and come from lower elevations in more true desert. Bert Landerwerf breed stellio stellio I believe which is common on some of the Greek Islands now and maybe even in some of the European countries. They are a dull brown with some lighter colors on them maybe tan or cream. They are basically all the same with maybe some size variation. They are super cool lizards.

They range from dark like that to almost all yellow with orange blotches down the dorsal midline. I am sure there are different subspecies as Eve mentioned. Ludakia stellio is the correct Latin name. I have a friend that has eggs incubating so if interested in obtaining more Dave let me know. Paul McIntosh used to breed a lot also but like Dave said he found there was no market. Probably because of the large number of imports causing the low price. A dime a dozen and know one is interested. Now imported less frequently the price has went up a little and they are in more demand now. They are one of my favorite agamas. I used to breed them when I used to keep Uromastyx. It is very cool to see their social interactions-very interesteing. Tom

Ludakia stellio pieca the other day, these are what I'm looking for , they are the cutest darn agamas.

I first saw them from a breeder name Thatcher in the UK. Black with orange spots, male has less, anyway I love them.

I can't seem to find any for sale. I even emailed him and asked if he sells to anyone here. Waiting for a reponse.

I dont care about the market, I would like a pair for ME !
