Selling and Pricing Geckos?

MattP Mar 07, 2004 10:39 PM

Hi,

I have a group of 10 really nice Super Hypo Tangerine Carrot tails. They all came from HISS and Dragon's Den. I paid a lot of money for them and I was wondering if I should sell their offspring for the same price if they are just as high quality as their parents? Of course, I would be raising the babies until they are juviniles so I could see how nice their colors are.

My basic question is; Can I sell the same high quality geckos that the "known breeders" sell, for the same prices they sell theirs at? Or do I have to sell them cheap, because I'm a nobody?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Matt

1) the better the reputation the better the price. I can guarantee you that. I'm a relative nobody, and I sold my stuff for substantially less than similar leos of others. You have to earn a reputation. And actually, that makes sense.

2) You really have to up the ante every year - because tangs are getting better and better, and the price is slowly dropping. You have to play it smart.

3) Have fun with your leos. If you break even, that's a great goal. If you want to fund your new SUV with your 10 tangs - that might be a problem. hehe

Good luck - sounds like you have great stock. . . .

Photos will help considerably in getting you a better price. A very good, clear photo goes a long way.

Who says you can't? You can but i'll tell you this, when I see a hypo leo for $200 I just pass it right up you want to lower it, that is your best bet. You will get high profit if you have that many leos right? I hope I helped you.

Matt, building a reputable, established business takes considerable time and effort to gain the confidence and trust of the buying public. This goes for any business. Along with that goes not only the reputation of having integrity and excellent customer service, but the quality of the product(s) you are selling. Unfortunately, we all have to earn our positions on the ladder of success, and along with that we get knocked down a rung or two from time to time. LOL!

But, just because a business happens to be at the top of the ladder, does not necessarily give them a ticket to charge outrageous prices if their product is not better than the next guy's. There have been numerous studies done on marketing and what motivates people to spend a lot of money on a 'name brand' product vs. a 'generic knock-off' of equal quality. Many people will spend $14.00 on a bottle of Advil (just because it's Advil) when they can get the exact same bottle of generic ibuprofen for $5.99. On the same token, sometimes the name brand is a superior product and worth the higher price. We are ALL consumers, and want the absolute best product for the least amount of money!

There a tons of people who will buy a leopard gecko because it's only $20.00, even if they know nothing about where it came from or if it is healthy or not. You have to ask yourself if this is the type of buyer you want to sell you animals to or not. If you are trying to reach the more discriminating leo collector, these are the people who will be looking at the level of professionalism you display, how knowledgeable you are, the quality of your stock and where they came from, and will be willing to pay a little more!

The good news is that you have breeding stock from reputable breeders who have paid their dues to the herp community by working hard over the years for their reputations and having superior quality geckos. It's perfectly OK to 'name-drop' when advertising your offspring by saying where your breeders came from. I would advise you though, not to ask the same amount of money that Urban Gecko, Albey, and A&M charges at first... you won't stand a chance! LOL!!!

You may want to take the price of a similar gecko from a reputable breeder and drop your price 50 or 60 dollars to cover shipping. Use it as a little incentive to purchase your gecko over another. I think most people would be more inclined to purchase a 150 dollar hypo from you rather than a 200 or 250 dollar hypo from someone else (for example). After paying for shipping there still paying less that the other gecko. I think that would be an excellent sales idea myself, it's what I plan to do if I ever start selling my gex. Just some more input.
