Found in a moist place hiding...

tiggy Mar 07, 2004 11:39 PM

I found this snake hiding under a log out on my property... I live in Northern California in a woodsy area. This looks and acts a lot like a couple of ringneck snakes I had found (orange band around the neck and bright orange tails to a less orange belly) in the whole docile-curl-up-as-tight-as-you-can sort of behaviour. However, this one doesn't seem to have any ring around the neck or a brightly colored belly. Its just as small as the ringnecks I'd found (less than the width of your pinky and maybe a foot long) with very dull hardly noticable stripes down its sides of a yellowy-orange colour and a cream coloured belly with black stripes. The top of its body is a sort of slate gray. What kind of snake is it and how would one care for it?

Don't know anything about their care, but I think they eat slugs and worms.

Thanks, that has to be it! I did notice its tail was sort of sharp... I was going to add it in my description but decided it was probably frivalous. Guess I was wrong Thanks a lot!

Hey, check out my post above yours. I live in Northern California also and my nephew just found a snake and gave it to me. I wonder if it's that same type of snake you found? This one is very tiny only about 4-5 inches long and about as thick as a earthworm. I thought it might be a ringneck because of its size but it also has no ring. Where in Northern California are you from?
