Lobster Roach Smell???!!

LindsayMarie Jun 10, 2003 10:48 PM

I have a question. What the heck is that smell when I pick them up? YUCK! It isnt a constant smell, but sometimes when I pick up a single lobster and hold it by its abdomen for my dragons to pick out of my hand, it poo/pees on me or something and it smells horrible. Is that some sort of defensive smell/liquid they put off? Or is it doing its business on me? Yuck. Also is it toxic or harmful to the dragons? They dont seem to mind it at all! Thanks, Lindsay

This is just a defense smell that will not harm your animals in any way. Most roaches when disturb will put off a defense smell. This has never bugged my reptiles one bit from chowing them down. You could keep a roach bin in your house for months and never smell anything, but when you take the lid off and disturb them here come the smell. I don't want to discourge people. Most of the time there smaell are not bad ,and they do not last long, and once you close their lid you won't smell anything. It still is much better than the smell of crickets.
