Breeding Northern BTS / how many matings are necessary

ReptileFanatics Mar 08, 2004 01:12 AM

Hello all. I pulled my pair of northerns out of cooling about 3 weeks ago. They were cooled at 68 degrees for two months. I began placing my female with the male about a week ago. Since then, I have observed two matings and a fight on every other attempt. How long do you typically introduce the pairs? How many matings are usually necessary? I hate to see the skinks fight. They are truly awesome pets! Thanks for your time. Howard.

hey howie, i agree with you that they are wonderful pets. in terms of mating, i would say the more times the better...if they have only mated twice after being cooled for two months, i think you should keep trying unless the female is absolutely not cooperating. a couple of things to remember are to introduce the female into the males cage when you mate them which i am not sure if you are already doing or not. do you have any pictures of your pair??? i would love to see them. also, you should stop by www.bluetongueskinks.net...all of us over there only talk about blue tongues and you will find a lot of helpful information and pictures over there too. here is a pic of my male northern Hefner. take care.

Thanks Flea! I have been introducing the female to the males cage, the only reason that I asked is because I have a really large female (about 6 years old) and a kind of small male (about 3). She really likes to beat him up. I think he likes it rough. I am only afraid to scar the pair too much. As for the pictures, maybe I can post them after the weekend. I have lots of work to do now. BTW, do you call yourself flea after the Chili Peppers Flea? Thanks, Howard.

I introduced my Female Eastern into my Blotchies cage and she just sat there and did nothing. He went straight over to her and commenced the 'poke'. This year it seems that my M&F were unlucky which kinda sucks, and that was after atleast 6 attempts. The one thing I put that down to is the fact she had come out of Hybernating and was put into a new enclosure with new Blueys and could have been slightly stressed. Fingers crossed for next year!
