uv for greenhouse

alanvines Jun 10, 2003 10:59 PM

Ok, I apparently require uv lighting. I would truly appreciate any suggestions in that area. I need several basking areas so wattage can be low. Which one puts out the most uvB? Do i need uvA? I suppose incandescent would be better since it puts out more heat than flourescent. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Do HID lamps put out uv??? I have been researching this and it seems a murky subject at best. I need the highly prized "experience" of you guys (and gals Lele, lol} thanx, alan

You'll need both uvb and uva. i dont know what kind of glass you use for your greenhouse but i've read that glass filters out uvb. I currently use Zoomeds Powersun bulb which is a self ballasted bulb that outputs both uva and uvb so you only need one bulb. they come in both 100 and 160 watt. i also use a combination of zoomeds reptisun 5.0 for uvb plus zoomed's daylight blue bulb for uva for some other cages. I used an 250 watt HID for about 6 months without any problems. It outputted a lot of blue light. only problem was that it was 250 watts and the ballast weighed 20 lbs. I did notice that the chameleon at more while using the HID.
