Keeping the water chill.

phunkeyphish Mar 08, 2004 10:20 AM

Hi, I just got an axolotl, its 3 inches long now, living in a 10 gallon aquarium for the moment. I've kept tiger salamander larval so I know their needs and wants, but Im having trouble keeping the water cool 60-68 degrees. Ive been putting in a frozen water bottle which is keeping it cool, but then it warms up again anbd another bottle has to go in. Also, i dont really have 100 dollars to buy an aquarium chiller, so any ideas would help.
Thanks.

Here is a picture of Garstang (named after the scientist). 3.25 inches long.

Most chillers are closure to $1,000. I've heard that a small
version for the home aquarium has or is coming to the market. Why don't you just turn the heat in your house down! That's got to cost a lot more than a chiller in the long run!

Good luck,

Brian

Yo!

I just got a baby Axolotl too! Small world. I keep him in a large floor tub. I filled it with ice before I got him, and waited for the ice to melt. I ocassionally throw in a few more ice cubes. Or put ice packs below the tank; they melt easier in water.
