need help with baby slamanders

glowskull Mar 08, 2004 12:22 PM

yesterday i was cleaning the sideyard of my house when i noticed that a trashcan had filled up with water and mosquito larve, so i decided to tip it over to get rid of the mosqutios. when i knocked it over i was shocked to discover 14 baby slamanders. today we are having people come over to do yard work and where they were located it probobly ment death for them, so i gathered them up, and right now there in a empty 10 gallon aquarium with wet paper towels for moisture and some large magnolia leaves for shelter. they appear to be slender slamanders, and are very small(less than an inch long). i raised frogs, toads, and newts before but never slamanders. i have done research and know how to house and feed adults but havent found any info on housing and feeding babies. any help would be apreciated

ARe you sure they are slender sals?Cause slender sals are not aquatic and the baby slenders are not aquatic either, but whatever they are if aquatic just keep them fed with small insects ,the mosquito larvae is good and if you can get brine shrimp or blackworms,if terrestrial pinhead crickets or small pieces of chopped redworms will work.

Sorry didnt understand where you found the baby sals, thought you meant they were in water in the trash can.House the babys the same way as adult terrestrial salamanders just give them a few hiding spots,i would seperate them 7 to one home 7 to another just to make sure they each get enough food, for food pinhead crickets, fruitflys, and chopped earthworm are small enough for them.

i found them underneath the trash can, right now they are getting aphids for food(from the plants i found them by) and tomarrow i'm going to the pet store to get black worms and/or anything else they will eat, they are extremly small about the width of a earthworm and about 3/4 of an inch long. thanks for the reply and any other info on raisng baby slenders and if anyone has any addintional info to add please feel free to reply
