****Question about lighting for sick dragon*****

pogo_the_dragon Mar 08, 2004 12:22 PM

Well that dragon I just adopted is hardly mobile at all...What I need to know is can I set the light fixture inside the aquarium (iguanalight 5.0 flueroescent) and place it so that the bulb is facing outward instead of downward so that the light hits the dragon??? Will it have the same effect? I don't know what else to do otherwise..I am going to house him in a 29 gallon for now until I can get him back on his feet but I want the full effect of the bulb to get to him and he can't climb to bask so he won't be able to get close to the bulb...Let me know...ttyl!!!!!!!!!

How about raising the floor, with a false bottom so he's closer to the top and your regular lighting system? A piece of plywood with some legs wouldn't take alot to make up, or even a bunch of rocks from the nearest farmers stone pile would work. I often use large field rocks to give high basking points, the rocks hold heat very nicely through the night too, and give them warmth from above and below. The only thing with them, is they have to be inside for at least 48 hours or heated up other ways (hot water in the laundry sink etc) so they are room temperature before they go in. Just like they hold heat, they hold the cold, and there's still snow here!

I would raise the basking area...platform style like Bexley said.....and personally I would use MVB for UVB....it's stronger and has more potential to aid him....also, a calcium product with d3 3 times a week or one of the T-Rex dragon products daily on the veggies or bugs, even both, and repcal pellets....would be an excellant start. I don't know where you live, but it you can get him out in the sun some that would be awesome as well.

If he's not eating you could put the supplements in baby food, add some repcal pellets, make a thin slurry and syringe feed him.

Good luck.
