red footed tortoise help!!!!!!!!

willis1234 Mar 08, 2004 02:47 PM

I was wondering if a red footed tortoise would fall into a little pond that I have in a fenced in enclosure if I was to house him/her there. I know that he/she will drown if it fell in so i was just wondering if i should put a fence around the pond or not. Thanks a lot.

I would keep him completely away from this.

Don't let any tortoise go anywhere near water deeper than the base of their chin. Given the mass for their size, Red and Yellowfoot's sink like a rock.

If you followed this advice with Aldabras you'd never get them to breed.
The safest thing is to put up a fence but another alternative is to provide a means of escape if the tortoise should fall in. As with anything in keeping tortoises there are a good deal of depends and there is no cut and dry answer.
In the case of the forest dwelling tortoises I don't think the dept of the water is a problem as long as you have sloping sides or stepped sides.
In the case of deset dwelling tortoises it might be a problem.
