need help with baby slamanders

glowskull Mar 08, 2004 03:54 PM

yesterday i was cleaning the sideyard of my house when i noticed that a trashcan had filled up with water and mosquito larve, so i decided to tip it over to get rid of the mosqutios. when i knocked it over i was shocked to discover 14 baby slamanders. today we are having people come over to do yard work and where they were located it probobly ment death for them, so i gathered them up, and right now there in a empty 10 gallon aquarium with wet paper towels for moisture and some large magnolia leaves for shelter. they appear to be slender slamanders, and are very small(less than an inch long). i raised frogs, toads, and newts before but never slamanders. i have done research and know how to house and feed adults but havent found any info on housing and feeding babies. any help would be apreciated.

I would assume that the care for the juveniles would be the same as for the adults with the only differences being the size of food and possibly the size of the enclosure. Those salamanders sound tiny and probably will require very small food items. Flightless fruit flies, hatchling crickets, rice flower beetle larvae and wild collected "field plankton" are probably the easiest types of food to find. I would recomend that you release them to a suitable area if you can't release them where you found them. If you want to hang on to one that shouldn't be a problem but check with local laws first to figure out the status of that species of salamander in your area. Good luck,
