I'm looking for some frogs!!

FreakyTah Mar 08, 2004 04:17 PM

Hi, I've just set up an aquarium that I used to house two geckos in with new plants and I was looking into getting a few frogs for it this time around. I've alreay dot 2 bearded dragons and I've had plenty of expierence with geckos but no frog time. Does anyone know of a good frog to get? Maybe some kind of tree frog? It's a 20 gallon long tank thats between medium and high humidity right now with a uv light only as of now. I was thinking about getting more than one frog as well, so if any live good together that'd be good to know as well. Thanks for any suggestions.

If you can somehow vertically orient the tank, then you could put 2 or so green tree frogs in the tank. Most of the time it isn't a good idea to house more than one animal per tank as a risk of stress, disease, and parasites. Green tree frogs are common, fairly cheap, and pretty easy to keep.

i would suggest a pacman frog or a pixie frog. But you can't house 2 or more of those frogs in the same tank or one will become the others snack. Horned frogs need an environment with about 3 1/2 of echo-earth with a layer of sphagnum moss over it. There should be a shallow bowl (about half the frogs height) of chlorine free water so they can soak. They need full spectrum lighting. The temp should be kept between 75-82 degrees F. Juveniles can eat feeder guppies and large crickets, adults and sub-adults can eat feeder gold fish. And i think thats the care for a horned frog... go to a site with a care sheet on this frog for more info.

Pyxie frogs require at least a 50 gallon tank. Horned frogs should not be fed fish at any stage of life. Fish are too fatty and can lead to lipid build up, which in turn can lead to early death or blindness. Same with rodents. They should be fed strictly dusted/gut loaded invertebrates. There is a care sheet on my website, the reptizone, listed below.

I disagree, fish can (in my opinion) be fed infrequently to offer variation. Lipid problems only occur as a result of an over reliance on this food.

I have a number of adsperus and edulis which i occasionally feed fish these frogs show no signs of lipid problems and have been healthy enough to produce a number of spawns.

Fish also normally contain a high parasite load. My frogs (when I fed fish years back) all had 5 loads of parasites, which probably was the result of the goldfish (as they had been wormed before effectively).

Maybe firebelly toads? You could put 2 or 3 in a 20-g long tank.

I would suggest a grey tree frog (Way better than green tree frog)
