What size tub (in a rack setup) would a Southern Pine need?

Tigergenesis Mar 08, 2004 06:54 PM

I'm looking at a rack setup with Sterilite 48-quart boxes. The 48-quart boxes are 17" W x 35 " D x 6" H.

Is this size okay or too small for a Southern Pine male? female?

I've never really seen any pits in person (only pictures), but I'm interested in adding a Leucistic Southern Pine and Sonoran Gopher to my collection this year. I was hoping to house them in the rack setup above.

Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Well many people disagree with me I would go with the biggest that you can. I would personaly go with LxWxH 48in x 30in x 15in or the closest to that. There is a caresheet on my web site for pines/gophers/bulls check it out.

Thanks for your reply.

I'm a bit confused though as your website lists a smaller cage size for pines and gophers - says 20 or 30 gallon. But in your reply you mention the size: 48in x 30in x 15in. There's a big difference in those sizes. I've never seen a cage or tub with that length and height.

I was really interested in a tub for a rack setup. Are you saying that height is really necessary for a pine or gopher? I was under the impression height wasn't that important with them.

Well.....it may depend on the snake. All my pits have a cage that is about 6 1/2 inches high. The two that don't; one is in an aquarium and the other one had to be put into a bigger cage cause he is a big dope.

My white bull that is.....He would squeeze himself between the top of his plastic hide box and the roof of his cage. I would come in and it seemed like he would be stuck. His length is about 5 1/2 feet and his girth is very thick, so the area he was crawling in didn't work out to say the least. LOL! He kept doing it...so I put him into something taller.

Take care!

Thanks Billy...the tubs I'm looking at are about that height. Do you think the length and width are okay (35x17) or do I need to go bigger for a southern pine and sonoran gopher?

That sounds good. My cages sound very much like the one you mentioned. I got them at The Container Store, and they are 35 x 18 x 6 1/2 or something.......All or most of my adult pits are in those comfortably.

Take care!

Thank you very much. I'm gonna see if I can get bigger tubs, but if not I wanted to make sure that size was okay.

Thanks!
