A horrible phone call....

pepe15 Mar 08, 2004 07:25 PM

So, because I am not feeling well today I came home and found a fresh sample of stool from Koda ,my three month old dragon, took it to the vet on a whim for a quick fecal b/c I have had him exactly a week today. The vet called and he has 4 on coccidia, flageltes and motile bacteria! (sorry for spelling) I have a call into the pet store where I bought him because he still is under their warrenty. I just hope that none of his clutch mates were sold and went to homes where someone didn't have any sense to quarintine them. I'll let you guys knows what happens.

I have to take the little guy back to the pet store so they can treat him. This just stinks! I have ordered parazap to treat my corn snake just in case anything could have been carried over, even though I keep all supplies and everything seperate. I do get to buy him back if he gets better though...hopefully soon.

no offense to koda, i got a few of my lizards from pet stores, but this is one of the biggest reasons not to get a herp from a pet store. the risk is so high! there's even a very good chance that what your koda is suffering from is all over all of the other lizards in the store, due to improper quarantining and stuff like the employees not washing their hands between cages and handling. people call me a pessimist, and i guess i am, but koda may never get better with the medical treatment from the petstore. i really hope that doesn't happen for your and koda's sake, but...

...then again, your pet store may be different. they may really care about the animals they keep, and may have researched them thoroughly...i have been in 2 pet stores like that ever and there are none in my area.

needless to say i make a point to never buy my pets at the petstore anymore. the less animals purchased there the less they can abuse. get them from a reputable breeder online. it's not that bad overnight shipping, and you know that you are getting a quality critter. probably at a better price. or go to a herp show and ask questions...

sorry so long, and i am really pulling for koda and you,

amanda

I was really hopeing that this store would be different, b/c it looked like the level of care they gave their reptiles was great compared to others I have seen...we will see how the little guy does and hope he gets better simply b/c I am already attached to him! Thanks for your support!

I hope this gets people to take a second look at keeping a new herp seperate from the rest of your collection...Koda did NOT look/act sick by any means. Granted this is my first dragon so I had nothing to compare it to but simply thought his lack of running around the cage to be the stress of an new enviornment! He ate fine and was even starting to accept light touching from me without running away. It was just luck that made me take his poo to the vet for a fecal today. Hopes this helps someoe avoid some nasty vet bills in the future!
