Canadian Tegu keepers?

muirsean Mar 08, 2004 07:43 PM

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone in the forum is from Canada? I am an experienced herper looking to get myself a Argentine B&W in the near future. Having trouble finding a reputable place that sells them up here, so if any fellow Canadian herpers can help it would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Sean.

G'day eh. I have an adult B&W and just picked up two new juviniles from other herpers(Red and B&W Argentines). Bad news though. There are no Canadian breeders for tegus of any sort. It is a safe bet that all for sale are imports. Sadly because they are not the easiest of animals to breed, especially in this climate where outdoor enclosures are not practical, the logistics for captive breeding oare quite unpracatical, and the cost for such animals would be quite high. As such imports will likely be the norm here for a long time. Being CITES II they are not difficult to bring across the border if you are willing to pay the money.

Good to see a fello Canuck!
Where did you get your B&W from? I have contacted Global Exotics in Ontario, and they apparently have them. Have you ever delt with them? Do you know if they are any good? I have considered shipping from the states, i talked with Bert about it, but apparently the cost would be so high it wouldnt be worth it. Finding a reptile can be a little difficult up here, I hope I can fing my Tegu some day! Thanks,
Sean

I am out West, thus have had not dealt with them. But as all tegus in Canada are imports, I figure it makes fairly little difference where you get one from. They will all take a bit of work, just make sure that they have basic requirements met and are not too emaciated and they should come around quickly in the proper conditions. Tegus are a hardy species to say the least.

I purchased My BW Columbian Tegu at the Edmonton Reptile Show last year fom a Calgary breeder - but I do not remember his name - The next Edmonton Reptile Show is May 1 and 2 but you can also post a question at groups.yahoo.comgroupEdmontonreptiles. I have had great success with Zuess - takes a lot of time to tame a Columbian but well worth the effort. Hope this helps

Hey, ive been looking for a blue tegu for quite some time now. Apparently there are going to be some breeders at the TARAS reptile sho in calgary on the 24th or something of april. there will be another one in august. i believe the breeder will be at both shows. hopefully there will be some left for me in august. also how "safe " is internet ordering? and shipping do the animals usually arive safe and sound?

I would be very interested in knowing who is breeding tegus in Canada. It is definately new to me, and in my area is a surprise to say the least. Could you tell me who will have blue tegus at the spring TARAS show?

hey. I AM CANADIAN (sorry...HAD to be done). Depends where you live. I actually got mine from a pet Store (that I work at...So it was easy) that gets there stock from Mirdo (wholesaler) and she's a sweetie. The B&W I had (sold...NOT died) was from Dap (another Wholesaler) I believe...It had a broken leg though (Thank you Super Pet). So that's about All I can say. But I find them so much more expensive up here that it might be worthwhile to look into american places. Super Pet wanted $310 for the B&W!!!
