Arghh...Evil Laws.

lavanewt Mar 08, 2004 09:51 PM

This is a real bummer.
I had done research on the African Clawed Frog for awhile, and found it to be the ideal frog for me. Purely aquatic, easy to feed, not to mention generally easy to care for, which is good for a beginner with frogs like me. I call a pet store to see if they have any, and what do you know. They are illegal in Maine? All the sites I saw only mentioned legal issues in western states. I get ahold of the Wildlife Association here, and they sent me a list of legal animals. Only foreign frogs are legal in Maine, none of which really appeal to me. So this is quite the bummer indeed.

and by foreign I mean five foreign. Heh.

The African clawed frog isn't considered a foreign frog? I know they can be illegal in some places because they do so well when released. Maybe that's it.

No, definitly foreign, lol. What I meant was, only five foreign frogs are legal here, not including the ACF.

ACF's are also illegal in cali and it sucks.

AZ I believe. Personally, I support the law. Do you know why they are illegal there? If you don't then I suggest you do some research. There as massive populations of these frogs in the wild, eating other species, their eggs, and tadpoles. There have been discussions on "other forums" about how almost every ditch in Orange County is filled with African Clawed Frogs. So tell me...why would legalizing them be a good idea? So that more can be released into the ditches and flood their numbers ever more? They have enough trouble with bullfrogs out there. Why introduce more pests...

If it weren't for irresponsible pet owners that throw bullfrogs and red ear sliders outside every time they got tired of them, then we wouldn't have sweeping and idiotic laws like these. Don't blame it on legislators; blame it on the ignorant people that instigated the law!

But I mean its MAINE. They'd definitly die off the first winter.

snakeguy88 Mar 09, 2004 04:19 PM

That is what I found strange. I can understand Cali. and AZ but almost all foreign species would last basically up to the first freeze, and then die off. I guess it just depends on what the state wants and doesn't want.
