Fruit Flies in the Water Problem

markj Jun 11, 2003 12:44 AM

Well, I've been having a problem with fruit flies running into the pond area of my tank. http://www.frognet.org/gallery/album56 This is the picture of the tank. Since that final picture the water has been lowered, more aquatic plants above the surface and some small twigs added in and out of the water. I thought that these would help get the fruit flies out but all the do is latch onto eatch other and form a fruit fly raft, its kind of funny watching them struggle to stay on top. Well, the water is only around 1.5 inches deep so too shallow for anything to pick them off. Oh, I also have 2 pieces of orange in the tank to keep them in the feeding area, it slightly works, but not well enough. Thanks!

How strange. why do you suppose they run towards the water in the first place? Mine always run for the hills! The flys run toward coverage and that is towards the back of the tank where there is a lot of foliage. I deposit my ff on the floor in a clearing and the frogs know this is feeding area. The flys immediately look for cover away from here which is away from the water. I notice that in all the tanks I have-ff like to run to a high place. Hey, does the edge of your land and water portion have hiding places that attract them in that direction? Do the stones you use to devide land/water stick up from the ground? Maybe they see a saftey high area near the edge and then fall/run in out of hysterical fear? Ah, the things we think about when we are Dart froggers.

Yeah,I'm sure some of mine get to the back of the tank and hide in the ferns. I usually put a lot in just to make sure all of the frogs get some. But still, you think the flies would have a little more sense than to go in the water. But, their brains are small, so I do have to give them some credit for forming rafts on each other to stay afloat. Thanks
