Mealworms as Diet Staple?

justinmatthew Mar 09, 2004 09:19 AM

Is it ok to have mealworms consist as the primary insect food? I had been feeding primarily crickets with a few meal worms or the occasional wax worm, along with kale, spinach leaves, romaine lettuce, and carrots. Mealworms are easier for me to maintain and keep alive than the crickets are. Thank You,
Justin

I wouldn't. Mealworms have a lot of chitin (sp?) that is hard for beardies to digest. Superworms or silkworms would be better. Also Kale and Spinach are calcium inhibitors, they are loaded with other good things but if you use them make sure you dust with supplement calcium.

wouldnt use mealies or supers as a staple as their not that good nutritionally , quite high in fat if i remember right.
