Building a Leopard Gecko 'Dream Home' Tank

scott_and_cat Mar 09, 2004 09:41 AM

Hello all,

Serendipity, the Leopard gecko we rescued will be coming out of Quarantine in a few weeks (She's doing really well, and is eating us out of 'house and home' :P) and during this time we are piecing together a new tank for her. She's currently in a 15L for the quarantine-- she's just about too big for it, though she has plenty of 'elbow' room to move about her water dish, cave & shade plant.

We'd like to know your opinions about building a Leopard gecko "dream" home. As it stands right now, we're not going to be breeding her. She's had a rough start, and we just really want to give her the best possible, so she can live happy for the rest of her lifespan.

1. We will be setting her up with her own 29L. We have an African Fat Tail in a 29L and she enjoys the space, though she's roughly 1/2 the size of the Leo.
2. Serendipity a climber, and very active!

So give us a run down how you'd set up your Leopard Gecko Dream home, we'd love to hear everyone's opinions.

One more thing: We moved her to paper towels...we kept having to change her water dish ever hour or so, because she kept digging in the calci-sand.

I am making plans for the dream tank too. I am going to have a fake rock wall and fake rock hides from scratch (I have a post with the links I am using for refrence in the caging forums). I am getting some slate tile or thin slate rock and I am still looking fo something else to do the other substrate, but I want a natural look. Its a 50 gallon long, but I am going to have 3-4 gex.

heres a link to a cool fake rock site...for the substrate you might want to get some play sand and bake it to sterilize it then wet it down and press it into the bottom of the tank let it harden and then itll be safe for the gecko...im glad to her your outlook on her life why your not breeding her and such you sound like a great person and we could use more people like you in the herp world... Fake Rock

Thanks that is another one to add to the list, I have so much info on fake rocks now, I am excited, I think I am going to make a hobby out of it and start doing dioramas now LOL or just helping my dad on his trainsets again LOL I helped him do som before, so I know I can do the rocks, but its so much fun! LOL I can't wait to get these cages done and looking good! For the substrate, I don't want to use sand, just prefer not to take the risk, but I don't know what I will use... I'll figure something out, but any other suggestions I'm open to.

There really is no risk because the sand hardens to a rock like hardness and theirs only a little bit of sand left on top very light layer...you could mix the sand with a 2:1 i believe ratio of water:wledbond and it will actually be hard and a rock and wont come loose...

Me and my brother were just contimplating putting some sand down and a coat of epoxy over it, then it would look natural and be safe and easy to clean. So you see any issues there? I just like to not take any risk.
