Is the P. palpebrosus the smallest caimen out there?

roadspawn Jun 11, 2003 01:01 AM

Hello
I just wanted to know if this was the smallest caimen out there. Also, what real size will one get, I've read between 4-6 feet. I'm thinking of embarking on owning a caimen, is this species ok to start with. I'm guessing on this one because of the size. Thanks to all who respond.
P.S.,,,,What should I expect to pay???? Where should I look??
Are there any breeders who breed them, or are they all wild caught???
RoadSpawn...
thanks again.......

Yes, it is the smallest and most are wc. Expect to pay about 175 for a hatchling.

Palpebrosus is the smallest of all the crocodilians..But BEWARE if looking to start out with one of those lil demons..lol...They may be small but dynamite comes in small packages and those guys are VERY fast and usually aggressive and do not like being picked up..Not to mention many of them are notorious for not feeding in captivity for long periods of time and they require a much different setup than other crocodilians...There are no "Starter" crocodilians...All require a lot of space and it can get expensive to house one...My advice is to find someone in your area who deals with these animals on a regular basis and volunteer to work for them and get some needed experince before embarking on buying one...Trust me, It will be worth it's weight in gold to you and give you an idea of how difficult keeping one of these animals can be....Best of luck...Mark
