Pacman died

tuwhada Mar 09, 2004 11:42 AM

My pacman frog died this morning clear out of the blue and I am not really sure why. Does anybody know of a common reason why they die I have had for a few months now and he ate a few days ago. He was in a small tank b/c he was still small, with bed-a-beast, water dish, UVB light a little moss and an uth. I was feeding him 2-3 large crickets every other day and I dusted the crickets once a week. Any thoughts, I want to make sure that I don't make the same mistake when and if I get another one.
Thanks
Christina

i believe that your packman might have died due to, possibally, the stress content put on him durring the time in the pet shop up to the time in your home. Stress is a mayjor killer of frogs especialy wild caught ones such as the red eyed tree frogs. Also your frog might not be dead to. i do not know if you know but there is a time in which packmans will go into a state of estivation, and get a glassy looking coating over them making then look dead, but really they are alive. Anouther thought might be the deadly bacterial infection "red leg" horned frogs that are kept in the wroung fassion and or streesed out might dellvelop this fatal infection. if u realy want to know if he had had red leg you should examine his underside and the inside of his leds to see if there is a warm, dark, red looking color, and that would be red leg if there were to be redness.

With the info listed, it could be anything. Stress is a possibility, toxicity is a possibility, parasites are a possibility. There isn't enough information to tell what caused its death. As for red leg, it SOMETIMES involves the reddening of the underside of the frog, which results from the breaking of cappilaries and leakage of blood. BUT, this is not always the case. Red leg (very much a misnomer) is often marked by a frog that is highly lethargic, refuses to eat, and dies a slow and painful death. I would get a necropsy done of the frog if still possible.

The term "red leg" is misleading.

It is impossible to speculate the cause of death. Next time an animal dies, bag it and throw in the fridge (not the freezer) until you can get it to a vet for at least a gross necropsy.

Unfortunately I had not noticed the frog had past until I had gotten home from work having only really checked on him the night before. I spritzed him that morning but not being a morning person he might have already been dead or close to dead already. I appreciate the advise. I am concerned about getting a new one b/c I don't know if I did everything right, do most people have success with pacmans or are they are to keep. I do have 14 other frogs some of which I have had for a few years so I do feel that I am NOT a beginner but it sucks when they die b/c I always blame myself.
Thanks again
