tegu appetite

nygaboon Mar 09, 2004 11:43 AM

I've had my juvenile AB&W for a month or two and so far he's had little appetite. I've offered everything but he still eats infrequently and in moderation. His health is excellent otherwise. Is he still in winter sleep mode? does this behavior come from the environment via stimulation(i.e. lowering the cage temps)or does it happen regardless of conditions every year even id kept at a contant summer temp?

Check out some of the past posts, they go into a lot of detail about this issue. If he just woke up, it may take up to a month sometimes before their appetitie kicks in. My little buddy at the first day, but only a couple nibbles. Three weeks later, last night, he ate 15 crickets and a golf ball size wad of ground turkey! It'll always depend on the individual, but maybe the earlier posts will shed more light.

He's asleep the majority of the time. He wakes up around 11 am basks for about an hour, noses around then goes back to sleep.

sometimes you can fool them by maintaining summer temps but they can feel changes in barametric pressure and weather fronts. sometimes they go to sleep regardless. With little or no activity, he probably wont eat unless there is something really special. Don't try enticing him into eating big meals unless he is spending more time basking and moving around.

You are the closest I have found on this forum, I'm in CT, my tegu, only had about 2 months, sleeps most all the time. It has only eaten 4 kingworms since I got it. He comes out from being burried every now and then, basks in the heat, then burries again, no intrest in food. I'm assuming it still knows it is winter, regaurdless of it's temps, and will come around in about a month. From questions I asked, leave it be, let it sleep, the more you distract it, the more energy it burns, hope I helped. 1 B/W tegu
