Damaged toe - anything else to do? (Long - sorry)

kelndigger Mar 09, 2004 11:59 AM

Unfortunately, my daughters dragon Spike somehow or other damaged one of her back toes. It looks like maybe a quarter of an inch is missing. We have her on shelf liner and we washed the foot (actually gave her a complete bath) and put antibiotic ointment on it.

It happened sometime Sunday. It isn't looking infected - but I was just wondering if there is anything else we can do besides keeping the cage/foot extra super clean and putting antibiotics on it?

I can't figure out how she did it - we have one of those half logs in the cage and two big climbing sticks (bought at pet store for lizards) for her to bask on - all I can figure is that she might have just got it caught in some nook-cranny on the sticks and ripped it - any ideas? Should I take the sticks out even though she loves climbing up on them and she actually sleeps on one of them!! Or should I wait and see if it happens again (God, I hope not - my daughter and I both cried even though Spike didn't seem too terribly bothered by it!)

Any thoughs/suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

Just keep doing what you're doing and watch for infection. At the first sign of infection get him to a vet and he'll probably give you some baytril (antibiotic). Unless you find the toe, you'll probably never know what caused it, I've even seen where they bit them off themselves going for a cricket. Good luck
