Please help! My newt may be sick!

jmuehlbauer Feb 09, 2003 08:46 PM

I have 2 fire-bellied newts which were perfectly healthy until I introduced a few fish into the tank. Some of the fish got "ick" and died even though a treatment was used in the water. The newts seemed fine, until one day I noticed an open sore on one of their tails. It was whitish, red like an ulcer. I took the sick newt out of the tank, placed it in shallow tupperware dish with water soaked paper towels for a few days. I dabbed weak salt water on the wound to help kill the infection. The sore disappeared and I placed the newt back into the tank. A few months later I noticed some patches on the newt's skin- kind of dull- lighter than the rest of the body, and more and more seem to be appearing. I'm afraid that whatever ulcer like sores it had before maybe coming back or is this some other skin disease? What can I do????

sounds like maybe one of the fish bit the newt? when one of my oscar fish bit the other one, it looked like that, a white ulcerated sore. I would not recommend mixing species, because in nature, they have hundreds of thousande of square miles to disperse, but stuffing them into an aquarium usually leads to injury to them. i would definately isolate the newt, change its water daily and make sure he is eating. maybe take it to a vet if at all possible, because it may need antibiotic treatment.
