Quick question...

athos_76 Mar 09, 2004 02:52 PM

I went into my local petstore today, and they had a retic that for a foot long or so, had a huge head. Well, after the little thing bit me a few times, I noticed that his lower jaw the whole way around the mouth was swollen and distented slightly...
He seemes overly aggravated and the jaw seemed to be nasty and filled with pus..
IS that mouth-rot? I have never had the chance to see it one on one, and if it is, what is the best way to treat it?

The way you described it, it definitely does NOT sound like mouth rot. Trauma to the jaw, usually caused by excessive rubbing and the sometimes the teeth cutting the gums can cause this. Afterwards, a buildup of puss built up can cause the "Huge face" and make for a pretty nasty jaw.

Treatment is fairly simple- sometimes, if the abcess is removed, the cage kept clean, and it stops rubbing it will go away fairly quickly by itself. I have also applied a certain ratio of Novalsan:water to the wounds after the abcess was pulled out-this seemed to help tremendously. But, this medication will probably have to be acquired from a vet.

Bottom line-unless you have some experience, a trip to the vet is in order. It should be a fairly short and inexpensive procedure for the vet. Good luck!!
