first crested, got some questions??

redrum Mar 09, 2004 05:59 PM

i just got a creted a few days ago. its a baby about 3 inches long. i have a 60 watt daylight and a 40 watt nightlight. is that too much? i keep it in a kritter keeper now. he hasnt ate a single cricket yet but i have fed him baby food. how often should i feed him baby food or crickets? should i alternate everyday b/t the two or something? any feedback would be great. thanks. -m

That probably is WAY too much. I use 60 watts to create 110 degree basking areas for other lizards. What are the actual temps? I don't think they should be above 85 ever. I don't heat my cresteds at all. (my place is relatively warm, never below 75)

You are going to wind up looking at a shrivled up gecko soon. That is WAY to hot! Cresteds do not need any extra heat. Room temp is the best way to keep them. Cresteds, ecspeciall juvies over heat and stress when temps climbs in the mid- high 80's. They will not eat like this. I offer a feeding schedule on juvies of crickets every other day and once a week instead of crickets I feed peach baby food. I hope this helps!

it depends on where he lives and how large
the cage ist.
the current temperatures are what counts.

sometimes my cresteds love to sleep/bask for some
time near to the light-source. but they need to
be able to go to cooler areas.

best regards

i live in VA, i dont put the 60 watt light right on the cage. its about 6 inches away from the cage.

after reading alittle bit more on the heat issue, i am just going to not use a light at all. i checked my room and it stays b/t 70 and 80 so i guess i dont need one. i really do like the effect of the red night light in my room at night. any suggestion on a ight i can get to that wont effect the temp or something. thanks alot. peace -m

You could get a florecsent (flourescent?). They don't put out much heat.

i put the light up about a foot/foot and a half and tested that. i got a temp and humidity gauge so i found out were to keep the light. my room doesnt stay too hot during the day or at night. it gets no sun light thats why i wanted to put a daylight on him. i think its good now. another quick question. he is about 3 inches, i have him in a kritter keeper but i have a larger cage. should i wait to put him in the larger cage till he gets bigger. i am thinking he might be to scared now cuz he is still antzy and looks nervous sometimes. thanks alot. -m

Don't put yours into a new cage untill after he has grown to be about four inches or more. I moved mine then and he had no problems at all. If you put them in a bigger container when they are still too small they can somtimes have problems finding thier food. It's better to be on the safe side.

they do not make fluorescent light bulbs, incandescent only...but you could put a transparent red plastic film over the fluorescent bulb

to get thet red light effect without the heat you can get a 25 watt red "party lamp" from most hardware stores and just keep it several inches away from the tank.
