Hows Rex doing???

owen13 Mar 09, 2004 06:47 PM

I read your posts and have a similiar situation with my Red Eared Slider. I'm really sorry you have to go through this. I hope you and him can make it through.

Peace,
Owen

Hey Owen, do you mean my Rex? If so, we were just at the vet again today. It's not impaction but his bones are really frail. I saw his x-ray, it was so neat. The vet thinks it's just the MBD, and the liquid calcium is all we can do right now. Hopefully he gets better, (I said this in another post, sorry to repeat myself) but maybe all these bad things are due to the sudden increase in calcium. It could just be a bad reaction that he needs to get over. You know like how sometimes medicine makes you more sick before it makes you better. This is what I'm hoping. I'm still frustrated that the vet keeps putting off doing a fecal to check for parasites. He said most reptiles that have parasites do the opposite of Rex and eat everything. Does anyone have any thoughts on that, I'm sure I've heard different. He said he gave him a de-wormer though, but I'm pretty sure there are other parasites that it could be.

I had a Red eared slider for five years when I was younger. I miss him It's kind of a funny story though. When I first got him (the size of a looney) we lived in a big house, with a big greenhouse, and a big pond (it must have been close to 200 gallons). He was so happy, but then we moved. We had planned on getting another pond made for him, but while we were waiting he lived in a big tupperwear container in our basement . I was just a kid and didn't have money of my own to get him a good set-up. So he stopped eating , we really didn't try much (I wish we had). The mall attached to my dad's office had a huge indoor garden, with a gianormous pond, filled with red-ears and other kinds of turtles. One day he put "Lord Milton Norman Buper Callow" (Milton for short, kids ) in a small container and snuk him in. We visited him there once a couple months later and he seemed really happy, I could point him out because of his shell's shape. I would have never done that now and I was mad at my dad for months. He could have made at least 50 turtles sick. But it is kinda funny thinking back, and he did seem happier when we saw him.

What is wrong with your red eared? and what is his set-up like? Sorry this post is so long. Thanks for your support,

Lisa

Hi

This is just my opinion, but I wish that you could find another reptile vet. to go to. You have suggested doing a fecal and you said he hasn't done one yet.

Just from what you have said here, I'am feeling this negative feeling inside about your vet., not exactly sure why, just call it a gut feeling.

If you have no other reptile vet. to go to then, demand he do a fecal test and don't take no for an answer. Only if you have to go back.

Take Care, TLB

p.s. - yes there are other parasites that it could be. I don't now how old you are, but lets say for conversation sake that you are a kid, then maybe the vet. possibly might not be taking your concerns as serious as she/he would an adult. If that were the case it would be very sad. This is only a thought.

No I'm not a kid, well at least my age says I'm not . However, I don't get a very good vibe from our vet either. I'm pretty sure he has never treated a leo before (just big reptiles like boas...), so I do get the feeling that Rex is not a huge priority for him. On a plus note Rex is up and moving a bit more than usual, but mostly just to let out gross snot like poop. This vet unfortunately is our only option right now, there are no other reptile vets in town. Thanks for you input,

Lisa

Right now my slider (burner) is in a 28 quart tupperware. He has a coil uvb bulb and a basking spot. The water is warm enough, not hot. I just hope he gets better, I spend at least 15 minutes every day just observing him and making sure hes healthy. I also make a lot of checkups. I don't want to lose another turtle.
