The indian star tortoises don't grow that fast at all and a 40 gallon tank would be fine for a while. If you get a male they only get 5 to 8 inches. Bigger is always better when it comes to captive animals. They are not as shy as most people say. and I belive they make great pets. I have lots of them and there a lot of fun.
