New Owner... Wild Caught Gecko

mommyof2greenigs Mar 09, 2004 09:33 PM

A friend of mine captured a wild gecko in Florida. I have iguanas and Geckos are somewhat out of my league in knowledge. Can anyone help me on feeding and care? The gecko is about 6 inches long.
Thanks,
Heather

Kinda need to know what gecko it is. Can you describe it? What colors or patterns, does it have any tubercular (bumpy) scales, and how many? What eye color, what color is the underside? If it's a wild caught from Florida and only six inches, it's a good bet it's a house gecko (Hemidactylus spp.)

Hi

Well then we now that it is a ground dweller, and that narrows it down a little.

Can you post a picture of it?. Also, like the other person said, we need more of a description.

If it can't climb glass I am at a loss to figure out what gecko it is, can't think of any wild gecko species established in Florida other than Tokays, Hemidactylus, Sphaerodactylus, and Tarentola. Don't know if Sphaerodactylus can climb glass, but they certainly don't reach 6 inches in length. All the others can cling to glass. Hemidactylus do have claws on the ends of their toes so I am inclined to think that's what you have. Are you certain it's a gecko and not an anole or something?

I have not seen a pic of it or it itself. I am inclined to think its an anole... He said it has a white underside with a red "throat pouch" so I am thinking its an anole... Thank you for your time... He told me this after I posted here. thank you once again
