AFRICAN CLAWED FROG...QUESTIONS..

sallie_keeper Jun 11, 2003 04:24 AM

I am very interested in the Clawed frog.. I want to learn all I can so when and if I ever get the chance to keep them, I will know what to do..

QUESTIONS..

What is the Latin Name for them?

WHERE is a good place for me to learn about the Clawed frog??

Where can I find one..or two on the west coast??

What is the minimum size tank they would need?

Can they be kept with fish(sized to fit), like their smaller cousins??

I like the look of these guys, but I can only find the DWARF species for sale. Other than buying from Science factory type places, where do I look??

Thanks in advance.

Xenopus laevis

There are many sites with clawed frog caresheets. Just run a search on google. You can also search the old kingsnake.com forums.

Depends on what state. In many Western states they are illegal to keep due to escapee frogs that are now harmful to the ecosystem

What is the minimum size tank they would need?

Smallest is probably about 20 gallons per frog, maybe more if large females are involved.

Nope you won't have any fish left. These guys eat anything.

You could always buy from somewhere like grow-a-frog, but I would not support them willingly. Just buy from somewhere like nasco.

These frogs are my favorite type of frog. If you live in California, they are illegal there. As was said, you could order from Nasco or Xenopus 1 companies. But I don't know if they would ship to CA outside of a laboratory facility. If you live next to a state that allows the sale and keeping of these frogs, you could simply travel over state lines and buy some then sneak them back home. The reccomended gallon per frog of water suggestion varies, and I've seen anywhere from 5-30 gallons per frog. Personally, I have mine in 10 gallons of water each. If you get some, keep us updated on how it goes. Later!

I live in Oregon. AND I've been to Nasco..BUt they only sell in lots of TEN.. WAY TOO MANY.. Would never be able to feed or house that many.. But one or two would be cool..

I will keep looking, and learning.. maybe I will get lucky..

Thanks..

Well I have 4 African Clawed Frogs(2 nornal 2 albino) in a 40 gallon aquarium with 4 goldfish they make it a little crowded but the frogs never move much anyway. All the frogs are very large and goldfish are very large, so ther is no chance of either eating the other. I have 2 pumps designated for I think 60 gallon aquariums on it 1 on each side with gravel as the substrate. No plants or anything becaue they liek to rearrange things. I also have 2 babies I got about 2 weeks ago. So now I have a total of 4 nornal African Clawed Frogs and 2 albono African Clawed Frogs. The albinos look liek giant swimming marshmellows lol. The biggest is about 5 inches long.
