Hi,
I'm taking a journey down this path myself and I'll tell you what I've done up to this point. I acquired three wild caught adults (or subs) over 1000 grams a piece. I didn't expect wild caughts when they arrived so I too was dumbfounded as to what to do with them. Here's what I've done thus far.
I purchased a few cans of 'provent-a-mite' a month or so prior for a mite problem I noticed. The stuff took care of the mites so back on the shelf went the cans. When I opened the box and saw the wild caughts with their TICKS I knew I was in for a bumpy ride. I bought a rack from MarksHerps.com (great guy by the way) for them beforehand so that's where they were going. I used newspaper as a substrate and placed them in their respective Rubbermaid sweater box containers. I then sprayed the Rubbermaid’s out well with the provent-a-mite product.
I phoned provent-a-mite (excellent guys there too) and they told me that the ticks would die when they fall from the snake and touch the chemical. They also told me to try 'Reptile Relief' (you can find at Petco/Petsmart), a product that you spray directly onto the snake. The premise is that the spray will soak on the tick and cause the shell to crack and/or cause the tick to release itself from the snake. Incidentally, I did this on Wednesday of this week. I applied more reptile relief on Friday as well.
Today I grabbed some tweezers, poured rubbing alcohol into a dixie cup and went to work on the ticks. I left the snakes in their respective containers and worked on the tick removal there. I bought 'Ball Python Breeding' a month or so back and recalled how they placed a towel over the snake in order to remove her so they could remove the eggs. I used the same approach with the snakes today.
I placed a very small towel over their heads and proceeded to remove each tick. Two of the three were pretty much ok with the procedure but the third one hissed at me several times. I paid it no mind and continued with the tick extraction. It stopped hissing after a few minutes.
I removed the visible ticks but I've noticed lumps under their scales where it's more than likely tick(s) are still residing. My plan is to take them to a local reptile expert here to get them sexed ($5 a snake). As I only want females, I'll keep the females and sell the males.
I have an appointment tomorrow at 3pm with the reptile vet who will inspect the females and do whatever the vet does
I'll post what the vet says tomorrow afternoon. I haven't offered them any food yet but I think I'll do that on Saturday as that's the day I feed my snakes.
I noticed some scars on the snakes but I don't care about the aesthetics, just as long as they're treated as I plan to breed the females.
The good thing to all of this is that you'll gain 'wild caught' husbandry experience.
Enjoy!
