Brought Jak to the vet today.....

chikimonke Mar 09, 2004 10:22 PM

She got a cocktail of deworming meds as a precaution, two oral and one injection, and has to go back in two weeks for her second and final injection. I also am awaiting the results of a fecal. I should get those in a day or two. The vet also said that Jak's belly feels like it may have eggs in it, which I would guess would help explain the lack of appitite lately. I hope that is the only cause of the lack of appitite, and not a parasite of bacterial infection, but I think I did the right thing by getting the deworming treatment and the fecal done anyways. I probablly should have done the deworming much earlier, considering I got her from a Petco. Ah well, Hopefully everything tunrs out ok. I just thought I'd give you guys an update since I've posted about this a lot lately, though with minimal response, but no hard feelings =) I realize we're all busy, myself included =)

Hi

I was just wondering if the medication that the vet. gave your girl would kill the embryos in the eggs or not.

Interesting that your vet. took the giving shots rout for giving your gecko medications, mine always gives me liquid medication and a syring to give my geckos medication if I ever have to.

Jak isn't actually gravid, she's just ovulating. She has never been with a male. As for the meds, she gets two shots and two oral doses. She seemed very knowlegable so I trusted her word. She asked me all the right questions about my husbandry and liked all my answers, so from that I knew that we were both on the same page. She is an exotics specialist at the biggest animal hospital I've ever seen. It's the Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, MA. It was a little pricey ($65 alone for just the visit) but I feel it was worth it to make sure Jak is healthy and to get compitant (sp?) and knowlegable advice. I hope that didn't come off like I was ranting or anything, just merely explaining the facility and what not.

Hi

Thanks for the reply, I hope that your little girl will be just fine.

Wow!, by the name of that animal hospital, it almost sounded like it was a peoples hospital.

Let me tell you, when I first pulled up to it, it looked like a people hospital. I had to read the signs to make sure I was at the right place. However the building is also an animal shelter and part of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. So I'm pretty sure the whole building isn't all hospital, but still impressive to see none the less. As for Jak, she seems to be doing jsut fine, just a little upset at me for bringing her there, but I'm sure she'll appreciate it in the long run. =)

Hi

I know what you mean about a gecko not liking to go to the vet., and if you watch the way the vet. handles them and isn't or doesn't seem to handle them as nicely as we do, we both can understand why.

I have this one gecko(adult)that had never bitten me ever, that I had to take to the vet. for an exam, "of which this vet. has zero people skills & I dislike, but he is a good vet. and the best priced one near me", and well anyways the vet. grabs him and starts to look him over and handle him a little less nicer than we would and my gecko Bit him real hard. Well I tell you, not out loud, but inside my head, I was laughing so hard I almost let it out. I now this sounds mean, but I was glad he bit the vet., because of the way the vets. non people personality was coming out that day exspecially.

Jak definitely didn't like being held, but I think the vet was farely gentle with her. Once she got her in a certain position, Jak just kind of let the vet go about and do her thing. It was a little rougher than I would have handled Jak, then again, I never actually pick Jak up, I just let her crawl onto my hand. Also, my vet had great people and animal skills, I was very pleased with her.

Hi

Hey, send her out my way will you?, she sounds like a vet. that I wouldn't mind dealing with.

The shot method may be the better way to go. I killed two of our 3 geckos by giving the medicine as told by the vet. You may remember my story a few months back.

Yeah, I remember reading about that, sorry about your loss. As for Jak, the vet administered all of the meds, the oral and the injection, so I did not have to worry about the dossages myself. The vet weighed Jak, 63 grams, and did all the calculations, and then gave Jak the meds. For the oral meds she actually used a tube that she put down Jaks throat. Didn't look too comfortable for Jak, but I don't think it was painful. She said it was to keep Jak from spitting the meds back up, says they are apparently quite good at spitting up stuff they don't like.
