confused as to why...

thegeckobarn Mar 09, 2004 10:55 PM

people use CLEAR boxes for hides. I mean, of course you can see your leo...but your leo can also see you, which means no feeling of security and peace...right??
All of my boxes are dark, and my leos love them.

I dunno, I guess I just dont get it *shrug*

I use the ziploc disposable containers for my humid hide, however, for the reason of Jak's security, I actually covered the entire hide in duct tape. It's her favorite place to be. However, most of those types of containers are actually only translucent (i believe that's the right word). They let light through, but do not allow you to see through them. But regardless, I still taped it up as to make it darker in there. I guess I really didn't have a whole lot to add to the topic, just felt like talking =) I'm bored

hahah good point that is odd. Since its still slightly see through they can still see the moving shadows which would wake them up and stress them.
mine is a margerine container, not pretty i know but Yucky has her peace and i have mine. Although Yucky sleeps in the open even though there are PLENTY of other spots that are out of my view in the cage.

very good point. My leos rarely lay in their hides. I do agree 100% though on the non-translucent hides, especially for a new leo or breeding females. They need a place to feel really secure even if they are used to you and their enviorment. Stress is a number one problem in health of a herp, best to keep it to a minimum.

clear containers in some of my tanks. For instance the two new girls i just got that might lay are using the containers they were given to me in (large clear plastic) for hides. I cut a large hole in the top and filled them with vermiculite. But and heres the thing.....i put cage decorations in front of and around them so you can't see in unless you take off the top of the cage and look from above. That way i can still see in without opening the container yet they still have enough privacy to feel secure. In my 40 gal i bought plastic double sided lunch boxes (one side is for a sandwich-top and the bottom is for snacks). I removed the center divider (It took me a while to figure out what i had around here that would cut thick plastic hehehe a saw works good so i found out LOL) and i left it rough enough so they can use it to rub off skin when shedding-Lily and Zoe i've seen do this already). I do have a ton of margerine, sour crean etc. containers and thats what Boo, Bronx and the other two new girls are using (still haven't named them yet). I already have containers for hatchlings if i get them. They are the small cream cheese containers.....Nala used one as her hide before she outgrew it

Ok thats enough of my rambling...I just got home from my 10 hour overnight shift and despite feeling tired i'm WIDE awake LOL. Two more nights of this and i'm back to afternoons.....WooHoo
