Hello everyone,

I am interested in getting an Eastern Indigo and as far as I know in the state of Maryland you need a permit to own one. could anyone point me in the right direction as where to obtain a permit? and from there where would be the best place to get an Eastern Indigo?

Thank You in advance

I don't think there is a state law in MD, but you may want to check your local DNR, dept of wildlife, to be sure.

If not, you'll only need the federal interstate commerce permit in order to buy across state lines, or no permit if you buy in state.

All the info you need, and a link to the federal permit application can be found at www.indigosnakes.com , status and permits section.

Good luck

Here in NY this is what I did. I wrote to the Dept. of Environmental Conservation, Special Licenses Unit for an application to possess an Eastern Indigo Snake. A couple weeks later I got an application in the mail....for a permit to possess a venomous species. I called the DEC and got some chick and explained the problem. She asked me if I was sure I didn't need the venomous one?? I said 'pretty sure'. I explain I think I really need one for endangered species. She asks me to "Hold please" Chick comes back ten minutes later and says she needs my name address etc and she will 'personally' send out the correct application. A week later I get the correct application. I fill in all the info and describe in detail how I will house it, ensure it is treated humanly and that I will "ensure the physiological and psychological well being" of the snake and what I want it for and how I won't endanger people with it. Who I am getting it from (in NY) and what their license number is and the name of their first born son (J/K about the first born). Amazingly I got my permit this morning in the mail....in less than a full month. I am amazed and excited. Now waiting for eggs! Good luck wrestling with MD.
