Retic not very active

NYCsnakelover Mar 10, 2004 09:50 AM

My retic, Laszlo, is still a baby (about a year old, 4 feet), and is the most inactive snake I've kept to date. Compared to my other snakes, (Burmese, Kingsnake, rainbow boa) he doesn't seem inspired to investigate his surroundings and appear to want to escape the tank at all. And this is supposed to be considered the most active of pythons?! He basically remains coiled all day and to some degree explores his tank at night, but that is minimal. He is very healthy and eating very well and I handle him 3-4 day a week (and is very relunctant to come out of his tank, unlike my other breeds).
This may be a blessing in disguise, but has anyone else experienced such inactivity and disinterest in their retic?

What are its relative housing and maintainance conditions? cage/tank size, temps(high & low), humidity, substrate, hiding places, diet, feeding schedule, etc...

any or all of these coould be a factor, some detailed info on the snakes care can enable us to put our collective finger on a potential problem.

He's currently in a glass tank, about 4 feet in length and 2 feet in width, with newspaper lining. The temp ranges from a high of approximately 95 degrees in the day to a night time low of approximately 84. I discard all feces immediately and clean the tank completely once a month.

My own personal opinion is that he's just a really lazy snake and just content laying in his tank. Given though how active all my other snakes were, I'm just a bit surprised, especially given the reputation of retics in general.
