CAGE SIZING..........opinions on this>>>>>>>>>>>>>

cv768 Mar 10, 2004 11:19 AM

We've got a cage...5' tall, 3' wide, 2.5' deep...our ig is only 18" long right now but soon she'll be fairly big...we don't have too much experiance with iguanas and we were told that this size of cage should be fine as long as he'd be out to excercise.

Opinions??? Would this be an okay cage size for an adult female iguana? We would let her out in the mornings and at night 4 days a week for excercise and the other 3 days she could roam all day if she wanted to as we'd be home all day.

any suggestions on how big a cage we should be using???

I only ask because this cage is free and if it won't work I'll build one about 6' tall x 4' wide x 3' deep.

I know bigger is better...but how long will this one be suffiecient for if it will be at all..

thanks.

In my opinion, if you are going to have her out like you say, then free is good and by all means use it...good luck...Lyn like you say bigger is better but to me free is good too!

enclosure as a temporary or permanent cage for her...I guess we'll see how big she gets and if she seems comfy...if not I can always build something bigger for a couple hundred bucks...Just curious if anyone had an opinion on the size...if it might be suitable for an adult iggy...thanks.

Because it is 2.5' deep, I think it will be suitable for an adult female iguana. Female igs usually don't get that big (4' is the average) and I've found that you can sacrifice on the length of the cage if it is made deep enough and if the basking area is wide enough that the iguana can turn itself around comfortably. It all depends on how you furnish it on the inside. That, really, is the key.

We've tried several things in our enclosures: branches, wood shelves, wire shelves.... We've found that wire shelves work best because it gives the iguana plenty of space to thermoregulate and move around comfortably, and if she decides to poop, then it just falls to the floor or into a tub, if you place one underneath the shelf.

Hope this helps!

My thougts..... 3.5' iguana max.

which would be an undersized adult (even female)

Even though an ig would have lots of roaming time, a suitable cage should ALWAYS still exist.

Cheers,

Craig
